Crystal Castles were a Canadian electronic music group formed in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, formed by songwriter-producer Ethan Kath and singer-songwriter Alice Glass, who later left and was replaced by Edith Frances. Crystal Castles were known for their chaotic live shows and lo-fi melancholic homemade productions.

“Empathy” is known for its ethereal and somewhat chaotic sound, which is characteristic of the band’s style. However, like many of Crystal Castles’ songs, the lyrics of “Empathy” are somewhat abstract and open to interpretation.

The song’s lyrics seem to explore themes of emotional connection, isolation, and the complexities of human relationships. The title itself, “Empathy,” suggests a focus on understanding and sharing the feelings of others. The lyrics can be seen as a reflection on the difficulties and challenges of truly connecting with others on an emotional level.

The album, Crystal Castles II was recorded by Ethan Kath in a variety of locations including an abandoned church in Iceland, a self-built cabin in northern Ontario, a garage behind an abandoned drug store in Detroit, and a London studio.
