Wet Leg – Chaise Lounge

This whimsical and hypnotic song was discovered by the SPD team today on a friend’s instagram story. Wet Leg is a British indie rock band from the Isle of Wight, founded in 2019 by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers. After ten years of friendship, they became a musical duo and signed with Domino Recording Company. The band name encapsulates their playfulness and irreverent sense of fun. According to a December 2021 interview, they chose the name by playing a game—picking different emoji combinations; on getting to Wet Leg, it stuck. Chambers said “It’s quite funny when people ask us what it means and we can’t explain it. Ultimately it can mean whatever you want it to mean.” They received five nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Performance (for this song!).

Chaise Lounge was their debut single, released on 15 June 2021, and gained media attention after earning millions of streams and video views. Chaise Lounge has been described as a tongue-in-cheek, post-punk song that directly quotes the film Mean Girls. While the song is considered a summer anthem, we think that January is a great time to enjoy fantasizing about laying on a chaise lounge in the sun.
